Man gets 24 years for armed robbery

A Tift County jury has found a man guilty of the December armed robbery of the Dixie Food Store and sentenced him to serve 24 years in prison. Also, a young Tifton woman pleaded guilty to the stabbing death of her brother and is awaiting sentencing.

The State Bar of Georgia has established an annual award to honor a non-lawyer citizen for his or her lifetime contributions to the State Bar or the judicial branch of government. The award is named for Eunice L. Mixon of Tifton, a retired educator who has represented the public on the Bars Investigative Panel since 1997.

City awarded $500,000 grant to help wastewater system

The City of Tifton has been awarded a $500,000 grant by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through the states Community Development Block Grant Program. The funds will be matched with Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax revenue to make sewer improvements to the wastewater system in south Tifton. The entire project is expected to cost approximately $1.2 million.
